Introduction

The name Brand is a german name meaning “sword” in old-german.Prant or brant in old-dutch means fire, piece of wood, glow, sword.

It also has the same meaning in old-frisian and old-norwegian languages. The name could be derived from Gerbrand, Hidebrand, Hadubrant or Willebrand. The name Brand could also be derived from the place where fuel was obtained or from land that was deliberately burnt down for development reasons.The name “van de Brand” has since changed to “Brans”.

When an official hears the name Brants or Brands he wrote down ”Brans” in the document of birth or death.

There is a small village south of Antwerpen with the name Brans, this is also on the map of Belgium. When I visited that village I noticed that the village signpost had the name Brants. It was funny that someone had crossed out the letter t on the signpost.

There is also in France a city with the name Brans halfway between Dijon and Besancon.

In France the name Brans has appeared since the 12 century.

Also in Germany and North-France the name Brans occurs frequently .

The village has Brans his name from a Family who lived in the 13^th century. Guillaume de Bransm chevalier, lived there in 1240,the Guy in 1364 and Jean de Brans in 1427.

In the church of Saint-Pierre in the town of Brans is a tombstone of the d’Odot Brans and his wife Jeanne de Vuillafans in 1464.
